What many believe to be the best London reunion for many years saw 104 Old Cambrians and guests enjoy a tremendous evening
in the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Air Force Club in Piccadilly, London. The dinner took place on Friday 11th April
2008, and was hosted by RAF Club member Alan Murdoch (Rhodes 1945-50).
As in previous years, Old Cambrians came from all over the world for the premier event of the calendar, and the evening was
more "lively" than usual as everyone relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the five hours of reminiscing.
The Secretary, Steve Le Feuvre (Clive 1970-5), acted as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and this year introduced a
fund-raising element which it is hoped will continue in future years, with all proceeds going towards the Old Cambrian Society
Trust Fund which is now close to being established.
Final bids were taken for the Prince of Wales School medal, which was eventually knocked down for a staggering £550 to
Brian Wood (Scott 1955-8), and he is now the proud owner of this unique piece of Prince of Wales School memorabilia. The
Society is indebted to Dave Masheder (Clive 1965-1970) for donating this exquisite piece of history of our wonderful school.
A raffle took place of a signed and numbered limited edition of the book "Queen of the Mara" by Dave Drummond (Clive/Grigg 1947-50), which he donated to the
Society just a couple of months before he passed away in 2007. All those present gave very generously with a total amount
of £418 being raised. The winner was Simon Morris (Clive 1956-60), but he immediately re-donated it back to the Society to
be auctioned. Bidding was brisk, and the hammer eventually fell to a bid of £100 from Bernard Dokelman (Rhodes 1960-3).
Dave Leslie (Hawke 1960-5) donated a fine bottle of Shiraz red wine which he has brought over with him from his home in
Durban, South Africa. Some confusion reigned over what currency the M.C. was taking bids in, but in the end he did establish
that only bids in Pounds Sterling were valid, and the hammer fell on a bid of £50 again from Bernard Dokelman.
Total raised for the Trust Fund during the evening was £1,118
Alan Murdoch then thanked Steve Le Feuvre for all his work for the Old Cambrian Society, and for organising a fabulous
evening ably assisted on the night by his wife, Suzanne.
For any who attended, please do send scans of your photos to the Webmaster, so that they can be added to this page.
