Mr & Mrs Stokes - 1940
Mr. Stokes (Housemaster of Clive House) with Mrs. Stokes outside Clive House
Mrs. Esme Stokes was a beautiful and glamorous woman, and a brilliant teacher of French and Latin. She was affectionately nicknamed "Ma" by the boys, many of whom had a crush on her!

John Walsh (Rhodes 1940-1946) wrote on 17 July 2003:
"Ma" was, indeed, the focus of many a lad's secret affections. She was in charge of 3B when I
was in that class, and it was thanks to her patient (and sometimes iron-willed) prodding that I
progressed from last to first in the class. Her pleasure in my success was patent. "Lulu"
(Mr. Stokes' sobriquet), by the way, was totally ambidextrous - I well recall his drawing a
beautiful crocus on one side of the board and at the same time writing the names of the various
parts on the other side in equally beautiful printing.
Richard Matthews (Clive 1940-1946) wrote on 02 Jan 2004:
I think that Mrs Stokes' Christian name was Eileen. She certainly taught me French. Without
looking at my school reports, I have an idea that Mr Stokes taught me Maths, but it may have
been Biology.
I do recollect an occasion in 1941 when the Prince of
Wales School was evacuated to Naivasha, Mrs Stokes was teaching form 3. The head boy of
Clive, Denzil Tryon got a bit fresh with her and she gave him a clout which just about
knocked him off his chair! She had no disciplinary problems after that.
