Prince of Wales School Sports Day - 1952/3?

100 yards race - Sports Day 1952/3?

About to win whatever race it was (100 yds?) is Tsipouras (see Scott Prefects, 1953). So these Sports Day pics were probably 1952 or 1953. Time keepers stacked up on the steps and facing the camera are (I'm pretty sure) - top to bottom - Mr Salmon ("Samaki" of course, and Canadian - well I can't be sure about this one - seems to me Samaki didn't have a moustache), Mr. Taylor ("Phud" - later Director of meteorological services) and Mr. Atkinson ("M'korbe") with the pole obscuring his face. Top of the steps on this side, back to camera, is Mr. Cobb ("Munya").

The guy in the large hat just in front of the drummer's nose (as it were) is definitely McLellan Sim - see the pipe! And beside him, white shirt and tie, is Mr Taberner again. I don't recognise anyone else. Perhaps names will pour in when pictures get posted.
The scoreboard shows the final state of the houses (since the band is drawing the festivities to a close), so perhaps someone can check the Impala for when Grigg got 244 points! But the prizes are still on the table, so perhaps it wasn't quite the end. On the other hand, I suppose nobody got to cart the prizes away anyway, so I don't know (once more!) Prizes - see the good old silver cock? I hope they still look after it.

I can't tell you who the lady is giving out the prizes, but behind the post to the left is Jack Forest doing the announcements. I think the guy sitting at the table is McLellan Sim, Art master and well-known local artist in his day - did a lot of murals for public buildings and his local landscapes were greatly sought-after. Personally, I thought they got to be rather "formula", but he probably made a lot on the side with them. Not bad, when you consider that he did a lot of this work during our class time!!
