Prince of Wales School / Nairobi School Crest Wall Plaque
Photo & text sent in by David Cresswell
An image of the School Crest mounted on a wall plaque. These were items of considerable prestige
and cost; awarded to especially worthy staff members upon moving on & to visiting dignitaries of
only the highest order. Very seldom seen. Glimpsed by we lowly beings solely upon their
presentation at the relevant assembly, speech day or whenever.
One can order them from any worthwhile tailor/trader who does old school/regimental ties,
badges, blazers etc. I got mine from Robert Old, Bournemouth in 1980 for about £6. Just like so
many of the things which seem so 'significant' and important to a child, no real big deal! I
chose the plaque style and colour to match as close as possible the three examples which I
witnessed being presented.
It's a pretty thing but a poor substitute for that massive cast iron affair bolted to the wall
of the balcony overlooking the main entrance. I was very tempeted to pinch it, but it was far
too heavy for a solo job. I doubt that anybody would have noticed for a year or two!!
The old watchmen were easily controlled with a couple of bottles of mauretina. One of the second
masters used to reward them with a couple of bob for each smoker caught. Well...the market rules!
Those who didn't fancy cuts passed over 'tatu'.
