Heavy Roller
Photo + text by Antony D. Williamson (June 2002)
The heavy roller which used to be used on the murram hockey pitch, the cricket wicket, the roadways, etc. I recall that it
was drawn by oxen, but it may have been by donkeys. Certainly if Johnny Riddell had his way it would have been pulled
along by boys! PT lessons often involved dragging the school's 'gombie cart' to pick up prunings deposited the day before
by Jake and his working party, which comprised of any boy who was not at CCF, sport or band practice with or without
reasonable excuse.
The niapara of the 'Shamba Boys', as the grounds maintenance staff were called in colonial times, was one Long John
Silvester, or at least that was what we called him, a very tall and immensely old man. Using his nickname within his
earshot led to risk of disembowelment with the sickle that 'Long John' always carried.
