Brian McIntosh comments:
Pat Mathers (above) was a day boy, and he used to ride his bike home each day via St Austin's
hill. Like you he used to go down at incredible speeds - (Brian is making reference to the fact
that Webmaster/Steve Le Feuvre was caught in a speed trap in 1975 going down St. Austen's Hill...........
the police clocked him doing over 50mph on his push bike, and gave him a verbal warning!).
One day, a VW lovebug stopped suddenly in front of Pat, and he crashed into the back of it and
went headfirst through the little oval rear window and ended up head and shoulders in the
passenger area. Fortunately for Pat, he suffered only a cut on the bridge of his nose. He was
such a tough guy. When we were in the Kenya Regiment in 1960 he established a record for the
dreaded assault course (smoke flares, thunderflashes, real bullets over your head, all while
crossing a river on ropes) that I'm certain was never beaten.
