Brian McIntosh writes from his home in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA “While on safari with my family in June 2007, we had the
great pleasure of spending time with a number of dear friends from the old days in Kenya. Among them were Tor
Allan and Sarah Henderson with whom we had dinner at the River Trees Country Inn at Usa River near Arusha.
Tor and I just missed each other at the Prince of Wales school, but we became good friends in the late 1960s and
have kept in touch since then. Today, although he is semi-retired, Tor Allan is still one of East Africa's leading
names among high-end safari operators. His client roster over the years has included many of the world’s rich and
famous. One of his best-known repeat clients was the movie star, James Stewart, who wrote in his autobiography
that some the happiest moments of his life were spent on safari with Tor Allan.
Tor moved from Nairobi to Arusha in 2000 where he has built a delightful house at Usa River with splendid views
north to Mt. Meru and east to Mt. Kilimanjaro. In between safaris with his old clients, Tor’s favourite pastimes
are reading memoirs of life in East Africa on his spacious barazani (verandah) and restoring a 51 year-old
Series-One Land-Rover. He has entered the grand old vehicle in the forthcoming 2007 Concours d’Elegance in Nairobi".
