On Saturday July 24th, a bunch of Old Cambrians and spouses, relatives and friends gathered at the Shahi Mahal restaurant
in Guelph for a curry lunch to renew acquaintances and welcome new Old Cambrians to our group. Guelph is a small university
city approximately 70 km west of Toronto. The get together was organised by John Heppes, who also provided unlimited
Tusker beer for the occasion.
Present were:
John Heppes (Hawke 1939-43) and his wife Peggy ...... Guelph, Ontario
Hal Oliver (Grigg 1944) and his wife Nora ...... Guelph, Ontario
Ron Bullock (Scott 1948-53) and his wife Chloë ...... Waterloo, Ontario
Dave Allen (Hawke 1960-5) and his wife June ...... Oakville, Ontario
Peter and Dorothy Levette (friends of the Allens') ...... Oakville, Ontario
Dave Burn (Scott 1955-9) and his wife Frances ...... Oakville, Ontario
Dorian Baxter (Grigg 1963-7), aka Elvis Priestley ...... Newmarket, Ontario
Zahir Dharsee (Fletcher/Hawke 1969-74) and his wife Nadia ...... Mississauga, Ontario
Abdul Merali (ex- Duke of York), friend of the Dharsees' from Vancouver
Mark D"Cunha (Hawke 1976-80) and his Mother Ena ...... Brampton, Ontario
Kamran Haq (Tana 1992-4) and his girl friend Lorraine Ng ...... Guelph, Ontario.
The get together gave many of us time to catch up with local happenings since we last met at the Roger Whitakker concert in
Mississauga last March. It was a delight meeting new Old Cambrians who will swell the numbers of our small group here in
Ontario. What an age spread we have through, John (1939-43) and Kamran (1992-94)! With so many wives and guests present,
conversations covered a wide and interesting field, including Dorian's experiences running for election to the Federal
Parliment last month. While Dorian was not successful, he made a very good showing against a well known and popular lady
who recently resigned from her position of Chief Executive Officer of a very large and prosperous Canadian company. Dorian
says he will be in the running again at the next Federal general election!
Ron Bullock circulated a recently acquired book, "Childhood Memories of Colonial East Africa". It is a collection of
essays collected by Joan Considine and John Rawlins, and billed as "Memoirs collected in 2003 from those Colonials born, or at school, in
East Africa during the years 1920 to 1963". A good read but could be frustrating to some because the writing styles of the
74 authors vary greatly. There's plenty of nostalgia though.
Zahir brought along his "house" school pictures and Mark brought along some of his personal pictures of his school days,
which brought back many happy memories to see how things had changed since our respective days at school were.
The buffet lunch was delicious, especially when washed down by the Tusker, by those who decided to retaste the folly of our
youth. So it was a "nyama choma na bier baradi". It was a good get together on a lovely sunny summer day, and we extend our
thanks to John and Hal in coming up with the idea and to John for making the arrangements. It is hoped that we will
repeat the performance next year, either in Guelph or elsewhere outside of Toronto.
