New Boys Enroute to School - 1949
Photo & report sent in by Dudley M. Williams
This photo was taken in 1949 at Mombasa airport. Having flown up the coast from Dar, we stopped for about an hour for
refuelling, more passengers, etc. Then on to Nairobi where I spent the night in the Torrs Hotel before being picked up
and taken up to the Prince of Wales school the following morning for my first encounter with 'Flakey'...... this was probably the most
traumatic event of the whole journey!
I think I am the one on the left leaning up against the plane trying to look cool. The one wearing the girls hat was
some boy called Clough going to St. Marys and the other boy was bound for the Duke of Youk – I don’t recall his name.
The plane is a Lockheed Lodestar.
This was my first and only flight to school. After the first term and I had settled in at school and made a few friends,
we all agreed it was a much more exciting adventure to take the three day train and bus trek. Unsupervised and with many
opportunities to “party” of course!!
