A little more than two years after these photos were taken, Tony Levy (Rhodes 1952-57), while on holiday from University in South Africa, died in a climbing accident on Mt. Kenya. Tony and a companion from Europe were descending from the summit when a rock to which their rope was attached broke away. His companion died instantly in the fall, but Tony landed on a ledge, breaking a leg and several ribs.

Being possessed of extraordinary strength in mind and body, Tony managed to stay alive until a rescue party arrived thirty-six hours later, but he succumbed to shock and exposure as the porters were carrying him down. His body was laid out in a shallow depression and covered with a pile of rocks near Austrian Hut.

Everyone from School who knew Tony was devastated at the news. We remember him as a natural leader, a sweet-natured individual of tremendous decency and integrity, and a great sportsman whose exploits in track and field - together with the likes of Bwye and Hopkins - helped Rhodes to win many trophies in 1956 and 1957.*
