I must have joined the band to escape the CCF (the bugle was lighter than a 303 rifle to carry around), but I paid for my
choice by having to march, on Saturday mornings, with the band round the quad in front of the whole school. For me, this
was `ordeal by bugle', since I remember often playing wrong notes from sheer anxiety.
