John Williams

Nickname: Willy
House: Scott
Years: Sept 1947 - Dec 1952

Memories of School:
  • I was a founder member of Scott (though in Intermediate House at the time) and remember the inaugural meeting held to launch the new House, with E.M. Cobb as Housemaster and Smith as Head of House.
  • The ‘shopping lorries’ were a great escape – afternoons when we went in to Nairobi for a couple of hours. Later when one was allowed to bring a bike the opportunities were even better.
  • Hopeless at all games, I retrieved my reputation somewhat by being able to sketch and draw.
  • I remember the long train journeys to and from Uganda each term, accompanied by a rather harrased escort. If Limurur girls or KHS girls were on board, that always made for excitement!
  • Becoming a Prefect and then Head of House brought new tasks and experiences, such as patrols out to remote corners of the compound to catch illicit smokers.
  • I once had the privilege of giving Roger Whittaker ('the Crooner') six of the best! I wonder whether he remembered.

    Since leaving School:
  • Cambridge University 1953-1956
  • Schoolmaster, Kenya Education Dept. 1957-1972
  • Seeing the World 1973
  • Careers Service in Cumbria 1975-1979
  • Ordained Priest in Church of England; served as parish priest in Suffolk 1981-1996
  • Retired 1997

I live in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, UK.
