I was at Nairobi Primary School for three years from January 1957 to the end of 1959. Then I went to Prince of Wales School
until the end of 1964, Junior House and Rhodes. I was always known as Angus Welford at School despite my name being John
Welford. This was because when I was first at Nairobi Primary I was put into Standard 5 Remove with a Miss Cameron as the
teacher. At the first roll-call she asked me my first name (meaning my Christian name, I believe) and I took her literally
and gave her my first name, Angus, and not the name I was known as by family and friends, John. "Och!" she exclaimed,
"Now that's a guid Scots name!" And she wouldn't let me be John even when I protested.
The name Angus stuck, not only then, but all through my school and Uni career from then on. Of course, Angus got corrupted
to 'Gus' and 'Haggis' and so on, so I was known by those names as well.
