   Tim Sudbury

Timothy (Tim) Julian Sudbury

Nickname: 'Suds', 'Sudbug', or other corruptions
House: Junior/Intermediate/Grigg
Years: 1958-1961

Teachers I recall:
  • Mr D S Hogge - although from South Africa, taught English literature. He had a wonderful laugh which went "Henk, henk, henk"
  • Mr Horley - taught geography
  • PC Reid was an inspirational teacher of history. He was also an awful wicketkeeper for the staff 11, described as The Ancient Mariner who stoppeth one in three.

I left the Prince of Wales School after School Certificate and returned to United Kingdom to do A-Levels, prior to going to Sandhurst and the Royal Artillery. During 18 years in the army I came across several old boys such as Pete Jenner, Nigel Warren, Robin Broad, and met up with Roger Taylor, who was in the Air Force.

After leaving the Army (with the rank of Major), I worked as an insurance broker until developing multiple sclerosis which ended my working life. As a result, I have been unable to make a return trip to Kenya. A consequence of my illness is that my three daughters have never seen where their parents grew up; my wife grew up in Cape Town, although we did not meet until years later at a party near Oxford. I recently bought a car which had been converted to take a wheelchair with easy access, and I became more ambitious in my aspirations. I started to plan an expedition which would involve a sea journey around Africa, with two long pauses in Kenya and Cape Town. The more I thought about it the more complicated it became, and the more ridiculous the expense! I decided that the only way I could do it would be to sell the idea to a television station and get them to foot the bill. This of course, would at least double the size of the party. It was during the initial planning that on a whim I typed Prince of Wales School, Nairobi into the search box and found the multitude of memories that are there!!

At present I live in Norfolk, England.
