Memories: My first memory is of being caned within the first week of being in Junior
House, for pillow fighting - what a shock to the system. Army worm was another treat especially
when playing rugby. I enjoyed all the sports, though not the best at any of them. Three or four
of us used to volunteer for cross country runs, just to get out and have a smoke, not realising
that we would be put in the house cross country team!
I don't think five years of boarding and caning has done me any harm, and basically I
enjoyed my time there.
After School I worked in Nairobi for a couple of years before going to South Africa, with my
wife. We were in Ladysmith, Natal, for a year and then transferred to Krugersdorp 20 miles out
of Johannesburg. In 1978 my wife and I left SA to hitch around the world - everbody seemed to
be doing it. 9 months later we reached Calcutta, out of money, but had already been accepted
into Australia. We lived in Sydney for 14 years, when I separated from my wife, and came to
live in Brighton, Sussex. No regrets at all.
