Ogova Ondego

Nickname: HOSS
House: Marsabit (Scott)
Year: 1982-1987

Memories of the School:
The best time of my life to date; I will never forget Nairobi School and the life-changing influence on my life and that of the future generations!

It was while in Form Two that my foray into writing, something that would become my career, was made. Twenty-eight years later, I am still in the harness as a writer, literary agent and publisher.

Marsabit House was the overall best house on merit (discipline, academic, games, performing arts) during my tenure as Head of House. How can I ever forget this when Marsabit received this accolade in the school hall as students and teachers marvelled when the HOH kept on going on stage to shake hands with Principal Sammy Kyungu?

I remember Principal Nyagah, the man who I knew as my Headmaster between 1982 and 1986, saying during assembly in the school hall on a Wednesday, "Some schools produce academics but Nairobi School creates men." How true. How perceptive. I always reminisce on this saying.

While in 'Patch' I was actively involved in drama, music, rugby, athletics, cross-country and even attempted to play cricket.

I was Head of House (Marsabit/Scott) in 1987 and a teacher (1988).

I also served variously as Class Monitor, House Monitor, Marsabit House Cross Country Captain, School Athletics Captain, School Cross Country Captain, School Head of Library (Senior Librarian), Bible Study Coordinator, Chairman of Christian Union, Chairman of Kiswahili Club...I had seven school colour honours!

Since leaving School:
I trained in mass communications and have since worked as a teacher, journalist, arts critic, event and talent manager, publisher, and mentor.

Currently working as a creative and cultural entrepreneur in Nairobi, Kenya, I help run Lola Kenya screen audiovisual media movement for children and youth in eastern Africa, ArtMatters.Info creative and cultural journalism initiative and ComMattersKenya creative and cultural entrepreneurship consultancy. And, I long to hear from Old Cambrians, wherever they may be.
