Aggrey Mulira

House: Nicholson
Year: 1967-1972

I am a Ugandan who had some of the best years of my life at Prince of Wales/Nairobi School.

When I arrived in Junior House, my first shock was the military discipline. I remember some of my prefects then: John Steed (if I remember his name correctly) always reminded me of a regimental sergeant major; McDougall was always fair as was Tom Muchura. It was always a joy, even when you were in trouble, to talk to Mr. Keon (Junior House Master) - do you remember his motorbike?

In Nicholson, Mr. Fox (the Housemaster) had a great influence on me as did my other teachers like Mr. Duckham (Maths) and Mr. Minns (Geography), both of whom were also my football coaches. I fondly remember Mrs. Sale (English) who, sometimes, used to play Beatles songs in class. I have never forgotten the words of "Lucy in the sky with diamonds"!!

As a House Games Prefect, I had a keen interest in all sports activities. I also played through all the "colts" until I reached School teams in football, rugby and athletics (I held the school record in pole vault). I was proudly part of the School football team (which included a current Kenyan MP) that won the Kenya Secondary Schools' Football Championships in 1970.

After leaving School, I went to Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. After graduation, I briefly worked for Grindlays Bank in Kampala. In 1979 I left Uganda for further banking studies in London where I have lived since. I have previously worked for a couple of US investment banks, and currently working in the City of London with a top Rating Agency. I am married and have 3 children.
