Memories of the School:
Vivid!!
Capt. B W L Nicholson DSO RN (Retd) Headmaster and French teacher; Vice-head -"Burbly" Astley; "Bush" Forrest &
"Rooikop" Redhead (OTC); J Twells-Gross and "Moony" Barton (Latin & English Literature); "Ginger" Gledhill;
Rev. Jimmy Gillette; "Jackie" Lindahl (Science); "Nyoka" Luckham.
Silver Jubilee of King George V (1935) - every boy planted a tree somewhere on the grounds. particularly round the cricket oval.
Empire Day ceremonies - Capt. Nick in full naval uniform - OTC march past in line-abreast!
"Work Parties" in lieu of sport on some afternoons when all the boys had to carry out maintenance to the sports
grounds i.e. weeding, mowing and rolling pitches etc, etc.
Career:
First job with PWD at £5 per month (jobs were hard to come by in those times).
After 3 months moved to a job in life assurance, but called up for army service on 30th August 1939.
Released from war service 1946 with rank of captain and returned to pre-war job.
Played hockey for Old Cambrians 2nd team.
Joined Kenya Regiment on reformation in 1950 as Private. Served full time for two years during Mau Mau mainly as
Asst Adjutant. Awarded Coronation Medal.
Married 1953 to Jane Dunn (Limuru Girls School).
1960 transferred by employer to South Africa.
Retired on pension in 1977 and settled in Cape Town.
Getting a bit "mzee" now, but would delighted to hear from, or of, anyone that may remember me!
