Andrew McCabe

Nickname: Drew
House: Junior/Grigg
Years: 1966-1969

Joined Junior House from Hill School, Eldoret in 1966 and then moved to Grigg House, eventually leaving Nairobi School in 1969.

Memories of school:
  • My class being attacked by a certain Maths teachers' Staffordshire Bull Terrier going by the name of Pythagoras..... very apt!!
  • Being at the end of Mr Potters' (Grigg Housemaster) cane on several occasions.
  • Sneaking "out of bounds" to the African canteen/duka to sample the delights of a Tusker or White Cap beer.
  • Spending Wednesday afternoons on the tranquil waters of Nairobi Dam with the other members of the sailing club (master in charge, Mr Pullen, if anyone can recall)
  • Those 12 hour train journeys between Nairobi and Kisumu at end of term.

I left Nairobi School at the end of the 3rd term 1969, and returned to the UK in 1970 where I joined the Royal Air Force and trained as an Air Traffic Controller, serving in many locations at home and abroad (Far East, Germany, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands and the Gulf region).

After 29 years I decided that it was time to leave and try my hand at something else. I was contracted to a company working in tandem with the UN and was sent to East Timor to re-establish airfield and communications links for humanatarian purposes after the troubles there.

I am now working for the Highlands and Islands Airports based at Inverness. I am married to Maureen and have a daughter Vikki(20) who works and lives in Edinburgh. We live in the sleepy hamlet of Forres in Morayshire, Scotland.
