I was Professor of Clinical Tropical Medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1985-2004),
with nearly 8 of those years spent as director of the British Medical Research Council Laboratories in The Gambia
(1995-2003). I have recently returned to Uganda (with my wife Penny) as director of a new Infectious Diseases Institute at
Makerere University, largely involved with HIV/AIDS care, training, prevention and research. The training mandate is wider
than just Uganda and we have courses involving healthcare providers from throughout Africa.
