Steve Jenkins

House: Rhodes
Years: January 1958 to December 1961

Memories of School:
Happy, though bits hazy after more than 40 years... Swimming (school team), hockey, rugby, athletics etc. CCF. Chapel.
Various masters - Gammie (from Aberdeen, taught English very precisely), "Charlie" Hurst (Maths), Walker (Maths), Salmon (from Canada, taught Geography - I still remember his story about Canadian streaky bacon coming from the Bay of Fundy), Larthe de Langeledure (French), Burton (House Master Rhodes and French), Hogge (Assistant House Master Rhodes and English), "Bertie" Lockhart (Music). Rhodes House "Coronation Safari".
Fireworks "battle" with Hawke, firing rockets across the playing fields on 5 Nov.
Climbing Kilimanjaro 11 - 15 Aug 1961 with Pete Bell (Clive), Clive Charlton (Nich), Pete Liversidge (Scott), Ali Mathers (Rhodes) and DS Hogge (Asst Housemaster Rhodes).

Since POW:
Left POW after School Cert. Went to Welbeck College (Notts), 1962/63, for A levels and entry into the Army.
RMA Sandhurst 1964/65, then commissioned into REME, Dec 1965.
Retired as Lt Col in 1999. Continued as MOD Civil Servant until Dec 2001.
Now enjoying retirement in Somerset and regaining health and fitness after heart problems. Married with two daughters and a son, all grown up.

I enjoyed the dinner in 2002, meeting many people for the first time for 40+ years. I am not sure yet if I can come to the 2003 event.
I would be interested to hear news of:
  • Pete Bell (Clive 1961)
  • Clive Charlton (Nicholson 1961 or 63?)
  • Pete Liversidge (Scott 1961)
  • Ali Mathers (Rhodes 1961)
and many more of my time.
  • I've had some contact recently through Friends Re-united with David Stewart-Jones (Rhodes 1961), now in New Zealand.
