I attended the Prince of Wales School from Jan 1954 aged 11 and started in 1A and Junior House (Mr. Minette was the
Housemaster), moved to Intermediate House in 1955 (Rev Capon was Housemaster) and finished in 6B in Dec 1959 in Clive as
a house prefect. Mr Ken Fyfe was Clive Housemaster and Mr "Dougal" Gammie was Assistant Housemaster. Achieved my School
Cert in 1957, but like everyone else in 6B didn't get the HSC. I boarded for 5 years and in my final year became a "daybug"
as my parents had moved to Nairobi after living in first Kericho and then Kisumu.
Although I had ambitions at school to be at first a civil engineer and then a vet, I started work in Nairobi in late 1960
(after a 6 month trip to England) at the Ministry of Works (PWD) as a trainee Quantity Surveyor (a job organised through
a friend of my father) and so remained a QS for all my working life. I moved to London in 1962 and worked for Surrey
County Council at Kingston-upon-Thames and then for Greater London Council in the old County Hall just over Westminster
Bridge. I became an Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, moved to Australia in 1967 working in
Melbourne, Sydney and then Hobart, Tasmania for an international firm of Quantity Surveyors and Construction Cost Consultants
that was later to became WTPartnership. I was made a Director of WTP in Hobart in 1972 and became sole Director in 1982
managing the business in three offices in Tasmania. In 1996 I moved to Malaysia with WTP working for three years on the
construction of the KL International Airport at Sepang, just outside KL, overseeing contract administration and dispute
resolution. I returned to Hobart and from 2000 to 2003 worked from home part time as a consultant but since then have
fully retired and my wife (ex teacher) and I are occupied restoring and renovating an old (1896) cottage and garden (20
acres) about 45 minutes out of Hobart.
I have one son, Richard, born in Hobart in 1968 who at present is living in Somerset in England and one dog, Macgregor,
a West Highland White terrier born in 1990.
