Michael Darling

Nickname: "Sweetie"
House: Rhodes/Scott
Years: 1945-1948

I have generally fond memories of my time at the Prince of Wales. I really enjoyed the sport available including the unofficial “pushy polo”. I was a member of the 1st XV Rugby, Captain of the 2nd X1 Cricket and Cross Country teams, played Tennis and Boxed for the school. I was also quite involved with Amateur Dramatics at the School over the years I was there.

I was one of the inaugural members of Scott House and became a School Prefect and Deputy Head of Scott in my last year there.

On leaving the Prince of Wales I went to Saasveld Forestry College in South Africa for two years and obtained a Diploma in Forestry. I spent 2 years with the Forest Department, a year was spent at Malindi (for 6 months) and Lamu (for 6 months). I was then sent to the South Kinankop - this was at the beginning of the Mau Mau. Unable to do much forestry I joined the Kenya Police as Inspector Special Branch at Kisii, and at the end of the Mau Mau emergency I became a District Officer latterly at Kajiado, which is where I was living when we left Kenya in 1962 for the UK. I worked for Shell until July 1964 when we came to Western Australia and where we have been ever since, working for Shell Australia for 23 years, and on retirement working as a Real Estate agent.
