David Buchbinder

Nickname: Bookie
House: Grigg
Years: 1962-1965

I was a student at the Prince of Wales School (as it was then) from 1962 to 1965, entering at third-year level (I had gone to Australia with my family after matriculating from Parklands Primary School, and returned to Nairobi after two years of high school in Perth, Western Australia).

I was in Grigg House for two years and then, upon its foundation, in Fletcher House for the remaining two years.

Having completed A Levels in 1965, I went on to complete a BA in French Civilisation, with a minor in English literature, at the University of Tel Aviv, in Israel (1968); and from there I went to Cornell University, in the USA, where I completed, first, an MA (1972) and, next, a PhD in English literature (1973).

My family having since resettled in Perth, Western Australia, I rejoined them in late 1973, and obtained a teaching position in the Department of English at what was then the Western Australian Institute of Technology. I have remained at the same institution, but it has gone through several changes, both in naming and structure: I currently teach literary and cultural studies in the Department of Communication & Cultural Studies, in the Faculty of Media, Society & Culture, Division of Humanities, Curtin University of Technology. I also hold a professorial Chair in Masculinities Studies.
