   Neil Brierley

Neil J.M. Brierley

House: Nicholson
Years: 1952-1956

Probably remembered for female parts in the school plays!

My memory needs a lot of jogging to retrieve those of schooldays and Ron Bullock’s recollections and descriptions of the Masters brings back many. It may have been with him that I went to visit Pop Binks? Was it my final report where Flakey had written “rather handicapped by his small size”?

I left school with the intention of becoming an architect and joined Jackson and Hill in Nairobi as a temporary measure before going to the UK. Things didn’t quite work out that way. I subsequently went to work in Nakuru with the architect Duncan Newman before doing my compulsory military training at Lanet, 2nd half of 1958.

I was then looking for a job and joined Customs and Excise in Mombasa until 1962 when I joined SGS, running their Mombasa warehouses. I married Joanna Chisnell in 1964 and we have two daughters born 1967 and 1969. Transferred to Bangkok in 1974, Tehran in 1978, Kuwait 1979 and then Jakarta in 1986, where we remained until I retired at the end of March 2005.

Now in Edinburgh where we have had a home for many years.
