Memories: Quite good. I went to Prince of Wales from an American school (Rift Valley Academy
at Kijabe). My older brother, Orjan, preceded me at PoW for two years. We are Swedish and our
parents wanted us to go to a school which was more similar to the Swedish ones of those days.
However, I did not graduate from school in Nairobi (left in Form 3 after the first term in 1953).
Instead, I finally finished secondary school in Uppsala, Sweden.
I started to study history and political science but then suddenly decided in 1959 to become a
physician. And so I changed to medicine and eventually specialised in Clinical Bacteriology and
infectious diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. My work originally centered on medically
important yeasts, now mostly on Legionnaires´ disease (at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm).
I am supposed to be retiring this year (2003) but am staying on another year.
My wife is a district nurse. We now live in Uppsala, 45 miles (70 kilometres) from Stockholm.
We have 3 children, 2 boys and one girl, all grown up, and two grand children.
