Year: 1958-1963
Left PoW mid-year to go to Royal High School, Edinburgh for University Entrance exams.
Memories:
  • As a day pupil, a hard ride up the hill from Kileleshwa
  • being banished from Latin class
  • botanic rambles in the valley below the rifle range with Seldon senior
  • the Wednesday afternoon? truck ride into town
  • the smell of bedside lockers after parcels from home
  • washing ammonium tri-iodide off the floor of Grigg very late one night after it has been spread in the walkway to the bathrooms
  • a thunderflash in Grigg courtyard
  • smoke mortars bouncing around parked cars near the cricket oval during a Cadet display on the flat in front of the main entrance
  • the bullock mowing teams
  • Cadet camp beyond the Ngong Hills somewhere, and trying to shoot guinea fowl with 303 blanks and a pencil.

    Since School:
    University Entrance UK, Undergraduate degree in Zoology/Psychology, University of Auckland, then MSc Zoology/Marine Biology, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

    Returned briefly to Kenya in 1973. Worked for Australian Museum, Sydney 1973-78, on coral reef fish communities, then joined Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service, Canberra - marine wildlife conservation, marine national park development, much involved in International Whaling Commission 1978-96. Member of team responsible for development of Australia's Oceans Policy, establishment of new Oceans Office in Hobart in 1999 and initial stages of implementation of Oceans Policy.

    Left Public Service in mid 2002, now private consultant on fisheries/sustainable marine resource use, based in Canberra.
