Evacuated from Egypt to South Africa in 1940 - boarder at Murchison prep.
Father was in the British Army, so posted to Nairobi. Sent for me and we lived in army quarters not far from the "Heifer
Boma". Started out as a day boy, but became a boarder after becoming a bit too involved with a young lady!! Remember being
keen on all sport, and played kettel drum in the band. Also part of gym team; also scouts.
Went to uk just as the Mau Mau started to fire the odd arrow at us as we came up the bush track opposite the main
gate. Joined the Royal Navy did 9 years. 1958 field gun crew team at Earls Court.
Now living in Whakatane, New Zealand. Married with two daughters. Have been in construction rigging and scaff
supervisor, commercial fishing. Now retired but have part time job driving for budget rentals.
Tor those intrested, John Harmes is also here in Whakatane.
