Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - September 2004

Dear Old Cambrian,

It's News time again. How the months just keep slipping away when you're having so much FUN!!!

Due to a serious "crash" of the computer where I store all the e-mails I have received over the last couple of years, I now have two Old Cambrians who have contacted me as they appeared on the "Where are they?" page; BUT I haven't a clue who was looking for them. So if you are the person who was looking to contact either Ray Carling (Nicholson 1953/4 to 1957/8) or Ronnie Standfield (Nicholson 1948) could you please e-mail me, and I'll make sure you are put in touch with your "old" friend.

Old Cambrian Society events coming up, plus also some other items I have been asked to publicise:

Old Cambrian Society (Kenya) - the Annual Dinner-Dance is to be held on Friday, 1st October at the Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi (7.30 for 8pm)
Ticket price is Kshs 1,500/- and details of the menu, and who to contact for tickets, can be found on the OCS web site at:

All East African Schools' Picnic (Sydney, Australia) + Kenya Regiment Association Curry Dinner - 23rd & 24th October.
For the fifth year running, the very popular Picnic is taking place. Anyone who has attended an East African school is most welcome to attend.
More details can be found on the OCS web site at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Events-Australia2004.html

2005 Kenya Calendar  (Historical Kenya Photos - Then & Now)
Kevin Patience (from rival school, Saints 1953-61) has contacted me.  He has a collection of historical Kenya photographs, some relating to the building of the railway taken in the late 1890s early 1900s, a few of which have been matched on a Then & Now basis, and this is the theme for his 2005 calendar.
More information, plus details of how to purchase the calendar, can be found on the OCS web site at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/KenyaCalendar2005.doc

1950s Kenya "SchoolSpeak"
Christopher Collier-Wright (Hawke 1954-1959) and Brian McIntosh (Rhodes 1953-1959) have come up with a truly unique addition to the OCS web site. Their light-hearted attempt at 50 years’ distance to remember and categorise the unique blend of language which constituted Kenya SchoolSpeak in the 1950s, is a fascinating piece of work. The first published "draft" can be found on the OCS web site at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/KenyaSchoolSpeak.html   Any comments, corrections and additions would be gratefully received.

Does anyone remember a Nairobi-based teacher John Anthony (Tony) Layfield?
I have had an e-mail from a Scott Macintosh which reads as follows: "My stepfather, John Anthony (Tony) Layfield (sadly now deceased) taught in the Nairobi area in the late 1950's and 1960's and I am trying to find out which school he taught in. He was a PE teacher but also taught science. Was it Prince of Wales? Do you have any recollection, or could you make any suggestion where or how I might find out?
If you can help, please e-mail me.

Webmaster is taking a holiday!! -  I will be in Kenya from 22nd September until 4th October, so if you e-mail me during that period you will not get an immediate response. I plan to attend the Old Cambrian Society (Kenya chapter) Annual Dinner-Dance at the Norfolk on Friday 1st October, and look forward to meeting up with as many Kenya-based OCs as possible that night.

As always, if you know of Old Cambrians out there who are not yet registered on the web site Alumni page, please urge them to contact me.

That's all for now!
