   Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - 21st March 2010

e-Newsletter -  21st March 2010

Dear Old Cambrian,

A very brief newsletter, the main reason being that I wish to make a special plea regarding the upcoming Annual dinner and Reunion in London:

Here goes.

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Dinner & Reunion on Friday, 16th April 2010 at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London

If you have not yet registered for the dinner, please could you do so in the next week. A simple e-mail will suffice.

The reason why I request this is that on 31st March I am off to South Africa on holiday, returning home on 12th April. I would like to get all the necessary seating plan and name badges completed before I go in just over a week, as when I return I only have a couple of days before I have to head off to London for the dinner.

So, if your name doesn’t appear on the list of attendees - http://www.oldcambrians.com/events2010dinner.html - and you wish to attend the dinner, please e-mail to reserve your places. Forms and payment can follow later.

You will see from the list that we have ‘Old Boys’ jetting in from around the world, but we’re a bit low on those from the U.K.!!

So, please register with me for the dinner in the next couple of days - http://www.oldcambrians.com/events2010dinner.html

AnnouncementNyumbani Golf Day – Thursday 29th April 2010 at Frilford Heath (near Oxford)

I have received an e-mail from Rod Collier (Hawke 1957-60) asking me to publicise a real fun day out played at a most delightful venue and for a very worthwhile cause.

Rod helps to run the day so please e-mail him via the Webmaster if you are interested in taking part. The salient details are as follows:-

  • Date of competition:    Thursday 29th April 2010
  • Venue:  Frilford Heath (near Oxford)
  • 18 hole Stableford off full handicap
  • Teams of 4 players,  best 2 to score
  • Cost £110.00 per player or £440.00 per team
  • Sponsorship for prizes and auction welcomed
  • Dinner and prizes included in the price.

Participation is open to all golfers and not restricted to Old Cambrians although you may well bump into a few old rafikis.  Please tell your friends and come and join us.  If you can't make up a team but would like to play we will try to fit you into some of the composite teams.  Maximum we can accommodate is 22 teams so it will be on a first come basis.

Information required – Fred Dollimore (Headmaster 1968-1972)

I have received an e-mail from Sheila Bristow, as follows:

I am the niece of Fred Dollimore and would love to hear from any of his colleagues, friends and former pupils.

I spent a wonderful holiday with him in 1988 at his house at Lavington, and in Mombasa, and met some of his 'old boys' who became his substitute family.

I recall only Christian names so need help in finding their other names. I hope to recognise some from their photos on the Old Cambrians web site.

It is my great fortune to have a wonderful Kenyan friend here in the UK. We are hoping to organise a return to Kenya for myself and my husband within the next 12 months. Any information (however small) would be gratefully received. I know my uncle was well respected and loved and that many of his former pupils were grateful to him for his influence on their lives.

 Thank you for your time.

 Sheila Bristow

If anyone can help with information, please let me know and I will pass it on to Sheila.

Since my last newsletter, I have been made aware of the passing of the following Old Cambrians:

Obituary – Jim Dow (Clive 1951-4) - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Dow,Jim.html

Whilst I was aware that Jim was extremely ill, none the less I was shocked to receive the news that he had lost his battle with cancer.

Jim and Lorna have been to all but one of the U.K. annual dinners since I have been involved with the OCS over the past 12 years, and in recent years they have come over to Jersey for holidays, so Suzanne and I have had the pleasure of spending many happy hours in their company.

The Scotmans newspaper published an obituary notice at http://news.scotsman.com/obituaries/Jim-Dow-journalist.6130877.jp

To Lorna, please be assured and comforted that our thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Jim was such a very special person!!

Obituary – Otto Jacobs (Nicholson 1954-59) - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Jacobs,Otto.html

Obituary – Mike Aggett (Rhodes 1959-62) -  http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Aggett,Mike.html

Obituary – Gus Ashdown (Rhodes 1968-71) -  http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Ashdown,Gus.html

Obituary – Leslie James (widow of the late George "Pansy" James, former Housemaster of Rhodes House, and first Headmaster of the Duke of York School when it was created at the end of 1948)

I have received an e-mail from Dave Lichtenstein (Old Yourkist), who had received an e-mail from Sally Rowson, daughter of George and Leslie James, letting him know that her mother passed away on the 5th March 2010 after a bout of pneumonia which at her great age of 103 she was just not able to overcome. At the time of her death she was a resident of Bridgwater Manor Retirement Village in the Cape, South Africa.

I make my usual plea........ If you are planning a gathering/reunion of Old Cambrians, please let me know so that I can advertise it in an e-Newsletter and on the web site.

That's all for now!
