   Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - 20th January 2010

e-Newsletter -  20th January 2010

Dear Old Cambrian,

A belated Happy New Year to everyone, and I hope that 2010 is a prosperous and healthy year for you and your loved ones.

Here goes with a rundown of important items for your attention:

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Dinner & Reunion on Friday, 16th April 2009 at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London

I would encourage as many of you as possible to attend this major Old Cambrian Society event, from where ever you might live around the world. Every year “old boys” from all corners of the globe use this premier event as an opportunity to meet up with school pals.

For more details, please go to - http://www.oldcambrians.com/events2010dinner.html which includes a listing of those who have confirmed their places to date, and also a booking form. Please e-mail me to reserve places.

Photos of recent Reunions   http://www.oldcambrians.com/PhotosReunions.html

One of the most visited parts of the web site is the Reunions page, and I remind everyone where to find this section.

I have taken note that the Western Australia (Perth) reunion is now rivaling the UK (London) reunion for numbers attending!!

If you are organising a reunion please let me have details well in advance so I can advertise the event on the web site. If you have hosted an event, be it a major reunion or just a gathering of a couple of Old Cambrians, please send me a brief report and photos for publication on the web site.

OCS Web site “hits” for 2009

What a result!! We just scraped past the 3 million hits on the Old Cambrian Society web site during 2009 – the exact figure was 3,009,616 which equates to 8,245 hits per day!! This is a 7.16% increase on 2008 when there were 2,808,444 visits to the site. 2010 has started with a “bang” and in the first 20 days the average hits per day is at 9,043.  This huge amount of activity and interest makes it all the more worthwhile for me for all the hours I spend updating the site, knowing that it’s so well received by all Old Cambrians who know about the web site, and of course countless others around the world.

Since my last newsletter, I have been made aware of the passing of the following Old Cambrians:

Information required – Dr. Geoffrey Griffin OBE (Grigg 1945-50)

I have received a request from Roger Manning:

I have seen the most interesting obituary of Geoffrey Griffin (1933-2005) on the Old Cambrian Society website. He was a scholar 1945-50.  A recent article in the London Daily Telegraph newspaper about Starehe School in Nairobi, which he founded, has prompted me to try and identify my family links with  Dr Griffin.

I know that Dr Griffin was born in Kenya in 1933, the son of an English police officer who went to Kenya in 1919 and an English mother. It is details of Dr Griffin's mother which I am seeking. She was related to my own mother, but at this stage I do not know what the relationship was.

I wonder if you have records, or if you can tell me where I should direct my enquiries, to find her maiden name and dates of birth, marriage and death. I believe she lived in Mombasa at the time of her death, which was probably in the 1970s.

I should be most grateful for any information you can provide.

If anyone can help with information, please let me know and I will pass it on to Roger.

Information required – Edgar Laurie & Eric Laurie

I have received a request from Angela Hughes:

My name is Angela Hughes and I am trying to find out some information on my late father (Edgar Laurie).
My father and his family moved to Mombasa around 1948 to 1958 and we believe that he and his brother Eric attended what was the Prince of Wales boarding school.
Unfortunately both my father and uncle died a number of years ago and my great uncle is providing me and my family with some information.
I have also been told that they lived in Nairobi but am unsure if this was before they went to Mombasa or after attending your school.
We also know that they both joined the East African Rifle during the Emergency.
I thank you for your help with providing me with any information that you can.

I cannot find an entry for either Edgar or Eric Laurie in the School Register, but someone out there may have known them and may have some information or recollections that I can pass on to Angela.

Information required – Lois Eden

I have received a request from Tom Eden:

My aunt was Lois Eden, who died aged 94 in 1994.  She taught English at the Girls High School in Nairobi for 25 years, starting I believe, in about 1940 at the outbreak of the Second World War.

I am anxious for any information you may have as to the exact dates she taught there and any other facts about her life there at that time.

With many thanks for your help

If anyone can help with information, please let me know and I will pass it on to Tom.
