Old Cambrian Society
"e-Newsletter" - January 2005
Dear Old Cambrian,
Rather belatedly, may I take this opportunity to wish
you all a happy, prosperous and healthy 2005 !!
So, it's straight on to the news and notices:
-
Send in your reunion
reports & photos - I urge everyone to send me reports and
photos of reunions/gatherings of Old Cambrians wherever they occur around
the world. There is a special page on the web site for Reunions - http://www.oldcambrians.com/PhotosReunions.html - and
the most recent to be held have been in South Africa in December 2004, and
in New York last week.
-
Web site continues to set
records ! Each week I receive an average of
five new registrations for the Alumni, and in the month of January 2005 I
successfully reunited over 20 people with their long-lost school friends.
Almost unbelievably, in the seven days from 24th to 30th January, the web
site received 32,365 visits which gives a daily average of 4,623 hits !!
I'm delighted that the web site, now just 26 months old, is proving so
useful and enjoyable to so many.
-
Jerry Sirley (Scott 1953-9) is visiting South Africa in February. He would like
to meet up with Old Cambrians whilst he's there. Please e-mail him at: Jerrysirley@aol.com if you live
in SA and would like to meet up with him.
-
If tracing your family
history is of interest to you, a newly launched web site https://www.familyrelatives.org is recommended. Two
Old Cambrians are closely involved with this superb site, where you can
search 300 million records of births, marriages and deaths in England and
Wales from 1866 to 2002.
-
Obituary - Bernard Njuguna Ciira
(Nicholson 1968-1971). It is with great sadness that I announce the
death of Bernard on 19th Dec 2004. An obituary will be posted on the web
site shortly.
-
Obituary
- David Spencer Brown (Scott 1951-1954)
died in Brisbane, Australia on 20th Jan 2005. I have
received reports that a good crowd of East Africans attended his funeral. An
obituary will be posted on the web site very soon.
Old Cambrian Society (UK)
- Annual Reunion...........everyone
from around the world is invited !!
Instead of the traditional annual dinner held in London on a Friday
evening in April or May, we are going to try something completely different
for 2005. We plan to make it an Old Cambrian
Society "weekend", and it will be held in Dover, Kent on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June 2005.
Saturday, 11th June
Inter-house golf competition at one of the local golf courses
For those like me who do not play golf, there
are plenty of historic sites in and around Dover, or you could take a day-trip
to France
Informal gatherings at lunchtime
If there is enough interest, then a get together in the evening can
be arranged
2.30pm to 5pm - a chance watch the Dover Pageant 2005,
which will be held at Dover College just 150 yards from Dover Town Hall. We will
have a private marquee overlooking the arena, where we will be able to watch the
Pageant, continue to relive memories of our (misspent?) youth, etc.
after the Pageant we can say our "goodbyes" and head
off home, or to our next destination......maybe the "nineteenth hole"!!
For the Sunday
lunch + Dover Pageant package costs
just £28, and to reserve places you are asked to e-mail
webmaster@oldcambrians.com
If you wish to participate in the golf, please e-mail Rod Dimech at dimechr@aol.com
for further details.
Old Cambrian Society (Canada) - Annual Lunch
............Saturday 25th June 2005 (12.30 for 1.00)
Price: Can$ 27.50
This
will be held at the University Club, University of Waterloo, Waterloo,
Ontario and is planned to coincide with the visit of 'yours truly' to
Toronto.
If
you are planning a "reunion", then please let me know, and I will publish an
advert on the web site and will also include it in my next e-Newsletter. All
I ask for in return is a short report and maybe the odd photo of the
'party'.
That's all for now!
