   Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - 22nd December 2008

e-Newsletter -   22nd December 2008

Dear Old Cambrian,

May I take this opportunity of wishing everyone all the best for the festive season which is now upon us, and here’s to a happy and healthy 2009!!

Pressure of work and other commitments have prevented me from devoting the amount of time to the Old Cambrian Society that I would want to, and I apologise to those who have had to wait for their Alumni registrations to be posted on the web site. For those who are waiting for photos to be published on the web site, I am getting there, but I have received so many in the past six months or so that I now have a considerable pile to get through. Come the new year, I will clear the backlog, I promise!!

During the first half of 2009 I am planning to commission a professional computer programmer to work on some of the aspects of the web site with the intention of making it more automated, and this will ease the burden for me. However, I can assure everyone that confidentiality and the integrity of the site will be maintained.

I have just a few points to cover, so here goes:

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Dinner & Reunion on Friday 3rd April 2009 at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London

I am now taking orders for this most popular event in the OCS calendar. For more details, please go to - http://www.oldcambrians.com/events2009dinner.html

We are restricted to 120 places, and with Old Cambrians planning to come from all over the world, please reserve your places as soon as possible.

Photos of Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (South Africa)Annual Reunion - Sunday 14th Sept 2008 at Stonehaven Castle, Shongweni Valley, nr. Durban, South Africa.  Go to the following URL for a report & photos - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Photos-Reunion2008SA.html

Webmaster in Australia – a couple of gatherings!

I arrive in Australia on 28th December, and will be in Sydney until 3rd January. Then I’ll be in Melbourne until 10th January.

Old Cambrian gatherings are planned as follows in the two cities:

  • Sydney  -  Tuesday 30th Dec 2008. Still working on details, but likely to take place in the Chatswood/Seaforth area and would be early evening. If you are interested in joining me and a few other OCs that evening, please e-mail me on webmaster@oldcambrians.com or use my cell/mobile +44 7797 743091. I’m looking for an Old Cambrian in the Sydney area to help organise this event, choose and book a venue, etc.  Any volunteers, please let me know in the next day or so……..I’d be very grateful of some assistance with this one.
  • Melbourne  - Thursday 8th January 2009. The “reunion” will take place at the Bridge Hotel at Mordialoc at 6.00pm. We have six people so far wanting to attend, but hope to get 10-15 on the day. If you are interested in joining me and other OCs that evening, please e-mail me on webmaster@oldcambrians.com or use my cell/mobile +44 7797 743091 . I am grateful to John Riches and Keith Trowell for their help with organising this event.

I will be taking some Old Cambrian Society merchandise with me to Australia …….. ties, pin lapel badges, blazer badges and Impala CDs. So, if you plan to attend either of the Australian reunions, and would like any of these items, please let me know by 25th December so that I know how many to pack before I leave for “down under”.

BookAfrican Dow by Jim Dow (Clive 1951-4)

A superbly written book, and a deeply intimate story of Kenya’s transition to a free nation, from the perspective of one man who can never forget his experiences in Africa.

For more details, go to - http://www.oldcambrians.com/AfricaDow.pdf

Kenya High School web site

It has come to my attention that the Kenya High School web site has been taken off-line due to the fact that no one could be found to maintain it. This is such a shame, and if anyone knows someone out there who would be interested in taking on this task, please let me know and I will put them in touch with the relevant people.

OCS Web site “hits” for 2008

As at midnight on the 21st December, the Old Cambrian Society web site had received 2,733,902 “hits” during 2008, an average of 7,679 per day.

By the end of the year that should take us beyond the 2.8 million mark, just a little up on 2007’s figure of 2.67 million hits. Well done, everybody!!

With deep sadness, I announce the passing of the following Old Cambrians:

Obituary – Ian Beaty (Clive 1954-9) -  http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Beaty,Ian.html

Ian finally lost his battle with cancer on 5th October 2008. The Old Cambrian Society (UK Branch) has lost it’s Treasurer, but we have all lost a very dear friend. Ian was such a staunch supporter of everything the OCS did over the past 40-50 years, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Val and the family.

Obituary – Deryk Wyatt (Clive 1955-7) - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Wyatt,Deryk.html

I make my usual plea........ If you are planning a gathering/reunion of Old Cambrians, please let me know so that I can advertise it in an e-Newsletter and on the web site.

That's all for now!
