   Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - 25th August 2008

e-Newsletter -    25th August 2008

Dear Old Cambrian,

Many apologies for the five month gap since the last e-Newsletter, but a combination of events have prevented me from having sufficient time to compile all the material needed to be advertised. Anyway, here’s your latest update of “all things Old Cambrian” :

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (South Africa)Annual Reunion - Sunday 14th Sept 2008 at Stonehaven Castle, Shongweni Valley, nr. Durban, South Africa.

Dave Leslie (Hawke 1960-4) is once again offering his superb property as the venue for the Annual Reunion, and this time it is being opened up as an All East African Schools event, so hopefully this will attract many Old Cambrians as well as Old Yorkists, and also those who attended other school such as Kenya High (“Boma”), Saints, etc. For more details, please visit - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Reunion-Durban2008.html

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (Australia) – As part of the 9th Annual All East African Schools Picnic - Sunday 26th Oct 2008
at Lane Cove River National Park, Sydney, Australia.

This is a highly successful annual event organised by Dave Lichtenstein (ex-DoY), so please let’s have lots of OCs and their families attending – for more detail, see - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Events-SydneyPicnic2008.html

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (Nairobi)Annual Dinner.

This event is normally held on the first Friday of October, but unfortunately I’ve not yet received confirmation of this. As soon as I receive more news, I will publish details on the main page of the web site, so please keep checking over the course of the next week or so.

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Dinner on Friday 3rd April 2009 at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London

Please put this date in your diaries, and I hope to see many Old Cambrians from around the world for the main event of the year.

Details and ticket prices will be published towards the end of 2008, so watch out for this on the web site.

Photos of Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Dinner, Friday 11th April 2008 at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London.

104 Old Cambrians and guests enjoyed a tremendous evening. Photos and report can be found at - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Photos-Reunion2008RAF.html

Auction of Prince of Wales School Medal

At the OCS (UK) Dinner on 11th April, the final round of the auction took place, and I am delighted to announce that this unique piece of Prince of Wales School memorabilia went to Brian Wood (Scott 1955-8) for the magnificent bid of £550 !!

During the evening, other items were auctioned and raffled (see report on the dinner), and magnificent sum of £1,118 was raised for the Trust Fund. The formal setting up of the Trust Fund is in its final stages, so I hope to be able to report more before the end of the year.

“To School Behind a Garratt”   -   New feature article for the web site

As announced in the last newsletter, Martin Langley (Nicholson 1956-61) has written a fantastic feature article about the Garratt steam locomotive and the memories, good and bad, of riding the school trains that it hauled. The article is quality through and through, and can be found at - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Train4.html  -  I look forward to receiving comments from those who remember using the trains to get to and from school. Well done Martin and all the contributors, for a feature that captures this piece of history in a most intimate and entertaining way, and is a truly worthy addition to the Old Cambrian Society web site.

“Pedal to Paris   -   Sponsorship, please !!

Steve Jenkins (Rhodes 1958-61) is cycling from Greenwich to Paris, starting 4th September. He is raising money for the Royal British Legion.

Please support him and donate generously. More details at - http://www.oldcambrians.com/Fundraiser-SteveJenkins2008.html

Webmaster is on his travels!!  -  maybe we could meet up ?

In the coming months I am doing a bit of traveling, and if you live in the particular part of the world where I’ll be, then please let me know so that we can meet up:

  • Hawaii  -  6th to 16th September 2008. I’ll be meeting up with my old school friend Tim Mathews (Clive 1970-3) whilst there, but if there are any other Old Cambrians in Hawaii (Oahu Island), please let me know.
  • New York  -  17th to 20th September 2008. Just a short visit to break the long journey back from Hawaii to the UK, and I’ll be meeting up with school pal James Ilako (Clive 1970-5) on Friday 19th Sept, so any other OCs who fancy a drink together, please let me know.
  • Beijing and Shanghai, China  -  8th to 15th November 2008. I’ll be out there on business, and it would be great to meet up with any OCs based in either of those two cities.
  • Sydney, Australia  -  28th Dec 2008 to 3rd Jan 2009. I’ll be out in Australia for a (short) family holiday, and would love to meet up with Sydney-based Old Cambrians whilst I’m there. At present I’m thinking of Tuesday 30th Dec 2008 as a possible date to meet up. Any takers?
  • Melbourne, Australia  -  4th to 9th Jan 2009. Any Melbourne-based Old Cambrians fancy a drink or meal whilst I’m there? Please let me know with suggestions.

With deep sadness, I announce the passing of the following Old Cambrians:

Hill School (Eldoret) Global Reunion  -  Sunday 12th July 2009 in Shrivenhan, UK

Many Old Cambrians completed their primary schooling (or part of their primary schooling) at the Hill School, Eldoret.  Accordingly, all former Hill School staff and students and their spouses are cordially invited to attend an informal sit down buffet-style luncheon in a delightful English village setting (the scene of our successful initial UK Hill School reunion in 2001).  This invitation is extended to surviving spouses or immediate offspring  who "still fly the flag" for deceased members.  Nan Pratt (nee  Brindley) has kindly agreed to organise this reunion at her local village hall - the Shrivenham Memorial Hall - which has been booked for the day.

For further details please contact Dave Lichtenstein lichtend@ozemail.com.au

I make my usual plea........ If you are planning a gathering/reunion of Old Cambrians, please let me know so that I can advertise it in an e-Newsletter and on the web site.

That's all for now!
