   Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - 2nd April 2008

e-Newsletter -    2nd April 2008

Dear Old Cambrian,

I can’t believe that April is here already, and the London reunion is just around the corner. A few points to cover, so here goes:

Reunion - Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Dinner - Friday 11th April 2008 at the RAF Club, Piccadilly, London

100 places have been confirmed to date for the main reunion of the year, so if anyone wishes to attend but has not yet reserved a place, please let me know by Friday, 4th April. Details of the dinner can be found at - http://www.oldcambrians.com/events2008dinner.html . Tickets are priced at £36.

The list of attendees is at - http://www.oldcambrians.com/2008DinnerList-numbers.html - and I will be doing the table plans this coming weekend.

During the evening, we will raffle a signed copy of Dave Drummond’s book “Queen of the Mara” (http://www.oldcambrians.com/Books-QueenOfTheMara.html), which he kindly donated to the OCS just shortly before he died just over a year ago. The proceeds of the raffle will go towards the Old Cambrian Society Trust Fund.

Update on auction of Prince of Wales School Medal

The latest (and highest) bid to date is £500 !! This is beyond our wildest dreams, and will be a great start to the launch of the Trust Fund when the last bid is taken during the OCS(UK) dinner on 11th April at the RAF Club. To keep an eye on the latest bid, visit - http://www.oldcambrians.com/POWMedal-Auction.html

Nairobi School – 6th nationally in the KCSE exams!

The academic progress being made by the school continues, and I am pleased to report that in the 2007 Fourth Form (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) exams Nairobi School placed 6th nationally. This was a vast improvement from previous years, and even more pleasing was the fact that there were 9 “Patch” students in the top 100. So the school is once again gaining great success on the sports field and also in the classroom. There’s still a little way to go, but the top place is within our grasp.

“To School Behind a Garratt” - New feature article for the web site

Martin Langley (Nicholson 1956-61) has written a superb feature article about the Garratt steam locomotive and the memories, good and bad, of riding the school trains that it hauled. Prolific web site contributor, Brian McIntosh (Rhodes 1953-9), has written the introduction ….. “To read this worthy feature is to take a fascinating ride down memory lane.  Its contents include schoolboy memories, a short history of the Garratt and the East African Railways, superb old train pictures, plenty of notes and technical data to satisfy the railway buff, an engine driver’s personal memoir, and even a couple of sound clips - one of them the Garratt’s distinctive two-beat chuffing, and the other a song called ‘The Good Old EAR&H’ by acclaimed alumnus, Roger Whittaker”.

I am in the process of coding it up for posting on the Internet in the next couple of weeks, so please look out for the announcement on the main page.

Kenya

It is good to see that the politicians in Kenya are working towards forming a grand power-sharing coalition government, and of course there are five Old Cambrians who are Members of the current Parliament and helping to carve out the new arrangement. Peace and harmony between the leaders, and also the ordinary people of Kenya, is of paramount importance for future stability and progress.

I make my usual plea........ If you are planning a gathering/reunion of Old Cambrians, please let me know so that I can advertise it in an e-Newsletter and on the web site.

That's all for now!
