Old Cambrian Society "e-Newsletter" - April 2005

Dear Old Cambrian,

I just can't believe how quickly this year is disappearing!!

There's so much Old Cambrian Society activity around the world, even I'm beginning to struggle to keep up. From little get-togethers, mini reunions, and right through to major Reunions, you guys are having SO much fun!!  Please remember to let me know if you're planning an event, and I'll publicise it on the web site and in these e-Newsletters.

Reminder!!
Old Cambrian Society (UK)Annual Reunion - Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June 2005 in Dover, Kent
Bookings for the UK's annual reunion are VERY SLOW, and to date I only have 34 registered for the lunch on the Sunday. Rod Dimech has just six for the golf on the Saturday, but I am assured that an inter-house competition of some sort WILL take place!!
I really need to have a pretty good idea of final numbers by the beginning of May, so if you're thinking about coming along to what is going to be a superb event, please let me know!! I will be sending a reminder to everyone towards the end of May, but PLEASE don't leave it that long to book your places.
Details of the reunion weekend can be found on the web site at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Reunion-Dover2005.html
To view a list of those registered for the event please go to: http://www.oldcambrians.com/2005DinnerList-numbers.html . This list will be updated daily as people book places.

Reminder!!
Old Cambrian Society (Canada)Annual Lunch ............Saturday 25th June 2005 (12.30 for 1.00)      Price: Can$ 27.50
This will be held at the University Club, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario. Don't let the fact that I'll be there put you off coming along to this great afternoon!!
Details of the menu can be found on the web site at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Reunion-Waterloo2005.html  if you are interested in reserving tickets, then please contact Ron by e-mail at  cambrian@pop.gto.net

Some news and other notices:
  • Web Site Article - "Philip Fletcher, OBE - A Headmaster Remembered" - Regular visitors to the web site will have noticed a superb article that has appeared on-line in the past few weeks. It is a tribute to, arguably, the greatest Headmaster of the Prince of Wales School / Nairobi School. My very special thanks to the researchers and authors of the article,  Brian McIntosh (Rhodes 1953-9) and Christopher Collier-Wright (Hawke 1954-1959) for this great piece of work. The article can be accessed via the home page of the web site, or directly at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/PhilipFletcher.html
  • Centenary Impala magazine - the first print run was sold out, and the Principal of Nairobi School is arranging for a second print run. I'm hoping to have a supply in a month or so, and will contact all those who have ordered one (or expressed an interest) just as soon as I have a definite price.
  • Web Site registrations continue to trickle in at the rate of 5-6 per week. But I know that there are many Old Cambrians out there that have not yet registered with me. If you know of any, please press them to drop me an e-mail.
  • Photos - I'm running behind (again!!), and if you're going to send me photos of the school or from your time at the school, could you please try to scan them and send them to me by e-mail. I just don't manage to find the 'spare' time to scan hard copies that are sent to me, and I've got quite a backlog sitting in my 'In tray' at present........apologies to all those who have sent photos in and who are waiting to see them posted on the web site.
  • ObituaryBrian Turner (Nicholson/Scott 1947-1950). Some of you will have already heard the sad news of the death of Brian on 26th Feb 2005 in Sydney, Australia. Brian was a stalwart member of the Old Cambrian Society and the Kenya Regiment. Brian was inspirational to me with the setting up of the OCS web site, and in the early days back in 2002 whenever I had an idea I would float it past him. His advice and suggestions were invaluable to me, and he contributed enormously to how the site has developed. We shall all miss him so much, and I have published an obituary page for dear Brian, which can be found at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Turner,Brian.html
  • ObituaryOle Sunde (Nicholson 1952-1958). Ole was murdered in early February on his farm in Zimbabwe. Please see his obituary page on the web site at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Sunde,Ole.html
  • ObituaryPeter Martin (Grigg 1959-1964) - Peter passed away on 5th April 2005 - obituary notice: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Martin,Peter.html
  • ObituaryIshan Kapila (Grigg 1970-1973) - Ishan was one of my dearest friends from my time at the school, and he sadly passed away on 15th April 2005 in Nairobi. He had a brilliant mind, and was one of Kenya's finest lawyers. He will be greatly missed, and I will cherish the few hours I spent with him last October at the OCS dinner in Nairobi at the Norfolk Hotel. Whilst we didn't know it at the time, this was the last we were going to see of each other. I have just published an obituary page for Ishan at: http://www.oldcambrians.com/Obituary-Kapila,Ishan.html and this will be added to shortly
That's all for now!
