FOURTH GRAND CAPE TO CAPE TOUR
In aid of
Macmillan Cancer Support
A
New Year…and
we hope a new year for those suffering from the various forms of
cancer and who look to the Macmillan Nurses for help and support.
Funds are always necessary… please read on:
Brod and Carolyn Purdy
are to use this 1966 Porsche 912 SWB coupé in May 2007 to raise funds in
memory of a family member who died in August 2006 and whose family
was extremely well supported by their local Macmillan Nurses. Brod
(an Old Cambrian - Rhodes House 1958-1961)
has also been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing
chemotherapy, making this cause slightly more personal.

Classic
car enthusiasts, Brod and Carolyn Purdy, are getting ready to drive
a 1966 Porsche 912 from Cape Wrath in NW Scotland to Cape Clear in
SE Ireland to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The
1400-mile route starts on 29 April 2007 and ends on 6 May 2007 and
will cover mainly lower classification roads taking in the Highlands
of Scotland and the hills, lakes and mountains of western Ireland.
As Brod explains: “Elizabeth, the wife of a cousin of Carolyn’s, was
diagnosed with terminal cancer early in 2006 and sadly died the
following August. During this difficult time, the family, Robert,
her husband, and Sara and Maggie their daughters, was given great
support by the local Macmillan Nurses and we felt that the
opportunity to take part in this marathon drive was too good a
chance to miss.” Brod is himself being treated for cancer, but is
confident that there will not be any problems that may lead them to
cancel the drive. However, the task ahead is daunting…1400 miles in
a classic that is already over 40 years old is an enterprise not to
be taken lightly. Hence the pair is hoping to interest local
garages their venture.
This is not the first time that Brod and Carolyn have raised funds
for a charity by completing a long distance driving event in a
classic car. In 2000 they took part in the 12th Classic
Marathon and drove a 1969 Hillman Imp from Ypres in Belgium to San
Remo in Italy via Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and, finally,
Italy. And by so doing, raised £1500 for the British Epilepsy
Association. Having arrived in San Remo, they then drove back home
through France following parts of the original Monte Carlo
rallies...in total some 2400 miles.
Brod has rallied for over 30 years as driver, navigator and
organizer in UK, Malta and China. In 1977 he won the Hong Kong
National Rally Championship as part of the Honda (Far East) Rally
team. Since 1999 he has competed in the Historic Rally Car
Register’s rally championship and the RAFMSA rally championship in a
self-prepared Hillman Imp. He has also represented the RAF on a
number of International Rallies and was awarded RAF Colours in
2000. In 2004 he was the RAFMSA Road Rally champion driver.
Outside motor sport, Brod is a Chinese linguist and is a former
General Manager of an electronics firm in China.
Carolyn started rallying in 1999 as Brod’s navigator and has
completed a number of HRCR rounds. However, she is more comfortable
with the non-competitive Tours and has navigated for Brod on the
1998 Falling Leaves Tour (in a TR6), the 12th Classic
Marathon (in the Imp) and drove the Porsche 912 on the 2007 Mermaid
Classic Tour around Lincolnshire. She currently runs her own
gardening management enterprise and was for a time the Vice
President of a small company in USA that imported high profile
European cars into America…including Porsches.
You can sponsor Brod and Carolyn by visiting their online
fundraising page on
www.justgiving.com/capetocape2007. You can pay by credit or
