CYCLING TO PARIS WITH THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

In three weeks time I shall be on my way from Greenwich to Paris by bicycle, with about 250 other cyclists. I shall
be taking part in The Royal British Legion’s annual 'Pedal to Paris' fundraising event. I was at the Prince of
Wales School from 1958 to 1961, in Rhodes House; some may remember me in the school swimming team. Cycling was
another interest - on the Old Cambrian website there is a photo of David Stewart-Jones, Andy McIntyre and myself
just after we won the 1961 Rhodes House Coronation Safari. I have continued cycling from time to time for leisure
most of my life.
During 2001, as I was recovering from heart surgery, I resolved to try to improve my fitness by cycling more.
By 2005 I felt fit enough to cycle home (near Bath) from Cornwall. In 2006 I joined the RBL’s ‘Pedal to Paris’
event, which I thoroughly enjoyed and I got enormous satisfaction in raising £1,330 in sponsorship. I have committed
myself to cycling to Paris again this year and we depart from Greenwich on 4th September. I still need to raise more
sponsorship - please will you help?
Well known since 1921 for their annual Poppy Appeal, the RBL gives a great deal of excellent support to needy
British ex-Service people and their families. Support is still given to many of the older generation, but there
are an increasing number of today's young generation benefiting, including some men and women who have been
injured in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ‘Pedal to Paris’ is one of many RBL fundraising events.
The easiest way to sponsor me is online, via the RBL’s ‘Poppybike’ website; your money will go direct to the RBL.
Visit
www.poppybike.org and follow the ‘Sponsor a rider’ link,
where you will be asked to enter my name; choose the 2008 event. If you are a UK taxpayer, please make your
donation gift aided as well. You can also find out much more about the event and the work of the RBL through
that website.
Thank you. Sponsors’ contributions really do make a difference.
Best wishes,
Steve Jenkins (Rhodes 1958-1961)
